when in vadapalani

Vadapalani is touted to be one of the busiest and colourful places in Chennai. Located in the western part of Chennai, it is famous for its temples and of course, being at the heart of Kollywood. Apart from being an arterial route for buses, the area also has its own metro station. Here are a few things you can do in Vadapalani.

Vengeeswarar Temple

Andavar Kovil and Vadapalani Murugar Kovil are famous temples in this area. However if you’re looking to go off the beaten path, you should head to Vengeeswarar Temple that is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple’s foundation is over a 1000 years old and is one of the oldest in the city. It is said that the sthalam of the temple dates back to Vedic age.

Kaveri Corner

This is not just another Tea and Juice stall. This place is where the aspiring film buffs in the city come to talk and share a glass of tea, or bite into a bajji. This shop is 13 years old and has quite the number of stories to tell. People are said to have made trysts with directors, producers and actors right here. Just opposite Prasad Studios, this tea shop sees more film stars than malls ever will. Mint Lemon Tea is this gritty roadside Café’s speciality.

Forum Mall

Of course, no list about Vadapalani is complete without mentioning the famed Forum Mall. There is something for everyone here. Movie goers especially will love the sprawling luxury of the Palazzo theatre. There is the ID restaurant for the Foodie with a penchant for south Indian cuisine. One can try the Mysore Masala Dosa, Sweet Pongal and Filter Coffee. Retail therapy of course is guaranteed with four floors of only the best of brands.

Raahat Plaza

Raahat Plaza was once upon a time, the go-to destination for all things high in style. Today the mall still caters to a variety of needs. There is Atrium bookstore, hairdresser’s, electronics and an eatery. This is, in a way, a smaller mall that was once what Forum is now, to people who visit Vadapalani.

Culture

Saraswati Vidyalaya, one of the oldest schools in Chennai, and Rajarajeshwari temple are popular venues for carnartic cutcherys or musical events. Festival times see many Poojas and Pradhoshams being organized in temples. The upcoming Navratri festival is a good time to look out for cultural events, information for which are usually available in newspapers.
