Chennai is the sixth in line of Indian cities with the metro rail service. The routes connect Nehru Park to St. Thomas Mount on Green line and Little Mount to Chennai International Airport on Blue line. Here are a couple of ways the metro has changed the landscape of the city.
Convenience

There’s a significant degree of convenience in travel, and commute time. For example, one can reach CMBT in 30 minutes from GST Nagar, which is quite unlikely on roadways. More so in peak traffic hours!
Traffic system

Metro is a dynamic element in the city that is setting off changes in the city’s traffic routes. With the metro in operation, a lot of roadways have been modified to become two ways, especially in Vadapalani and ,the Kilpauk to Chetpet route. Pretty soon with people using the metro more frequently, the roads will see lesser number of vehicles. This is also good news for the environment. The challenge here is to integrate other modes of transport like train and bus with the metro to achieve efficiency.
Infrastructure

Areas like Vadapalani are poised to improve in functionality with the progression of the Metro Rail work. The Metro has led to an increase in price and since 2014, the real estate value has doubled. Ashok Nagar, Vadapalani and Ekkaduthangal are few areas that stand to benefit significantly. This means that smaller shops will have to merge into complexes and many companies will look to move closer to these places.
City planning

Chennai is all set to get it’s own Time’s Square soon. This mini commercial intersection near the Central Station will have 6 entry/exit points leading to the Southern Railway headquarters, Park Town Metropolitan Rapid Transit System (MRTS) station, suburban rail station, Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and Ripon Building. The intention is to have the metro station as an important centre for connectivity.
Hospitality

In terms of the hospitality sector, Chennai’s hotels and services also seem to be shifting from Mount Road to upcoming areas like MRC Nagar and Guindy. Ceebros and Empee Group are just some of the many companies that are setting up shop in these corridors.
The prospects for the city’s infrastructure and lifestyle are improving with developments, the metro rail being one of them. Here’s hoping our commute gets a little faster and our lives, a little easier!
