Diwali is just around the corner, and November 6th is closer than you think! We know there is a certain excitement in last-minute preparations. But that being said, we want to make sure you don’t fall into the same old spiral of pulling out dusty decorations, even though you promised yourself this Diwali is going to be different. Here are some ideas we have for you, after scouring the grand old Internet.

1. Festival of lights

The spirit of the celebration really comes through with the beautiful diyas and lights that decorate every home in the city. You can make a style statement by choosing from the wide spectrum of simple or ostentatious clay diyas, which you can buy from local vendors or online. There are endless ways to use quirky lamp shades and serial lights, to lighten up your living room and window frames.  You can find battery operated serial lights here.

2. Wall hangings

Ditch the old plastic toranams and go for strings of fresh flower, to adorn the hallways and pooja alcoves. They lend a refreshing aesthetic to the space, not to mention the floral scent that wafts over the room. You can wrap the colourful blooms around grills and conventionally overlooked areas, like open shelves. Buying décor doesn’t have to be expensive. You can hang creative pieces like this one in a corner or a blank wall space. Many flats in Chennai have guidelines about drilling holes in walls, so make sure you keep that in mind while buying wall ornamentations.

3. Rangoli trials

Rangoli is not just the turf of the artistically gifted. There are a vast number of designs ranging from the simple but colourful, to the more intricate ones. You can buy stencils to create motifs around your designs. If you would much rather buy Rangoli stickers, there are plenty available in local stores. Or why don’t you check this out?

4. All things scented

After having cleaned and doing up the place, you can move your focus to the finer things. Use scented candles, aroma oils and sticks, to add a great sensory experience to the evening. There are a host of natural fragrances like lavender, vanilla or jasmine that are for every room and every mood. Here is a selection that you can choose from.

5. Upholstery overhaul

If you are in the mood for some big change, why not put the old cushions in a new covers. Old Sofas and curtains can be reupholstered to fit the festive mood. Also check out these sequinned-cushions that will add even more sparkle to your Diwali. You’d be surprised what a little sprucing up can do to amp up the festive mood.
